“I Ching Hexagram 19 (Approach) with no changing lines — growth or warning?”

My response:

A most succinct explaination.

I personally do not contemplate the 2ndary hexagram as i personally do not ascribe to the later creation of the “changing lines” thing. It was not how the ancient diviners, who were not just scholars of the Yi nor were not just skilled in mechanical means and the technical aspect of the Yi, but they were deeply connected with the fabric of reality coming straight from the Shamanic lineage – meaning these people were wizards of their time; no joke.

u/Complex-Nothing8763 Where most people get wrong with the Yi is that they do not realize the Yi is not a personified thing/entity and that it’s just a tool; that no mortal man can predict the future but the Yi helps us, like a compass in the wilds, navigate and align back to True North. In this sense since the 64 hexagrams are basically a universal archetype of 64 major categories of occurances, we need not feel as if we ought to be locked into one interpretation or archetypal cycle (read: J. Campbell “Hero of A Thousand Faces”), especially with the Yi.

The Yi is a great tool for navigating the universe of constant change within and without. If you can understand that the oldest parts of a hexagram were actually the line texts and prognostications, based on historical context (read: Steve Marshall’s “Mandate of Heaven”) then you will get a better sense of what sometimes these confusing hexagrams are on about. Know what i’m sayin?

Hexagram 19 is the opposite of hexagram 20. Hexagram 20 basically looks like a watchtower where archers would stand by and noscope their enemies from a high vantage point; it also represents a structure/landmark that can be seen from the distance (two yang lines at the top and all the yin lines are like the legs of the structure/landmark/watchtower); hexagram 20 is also like something you look up to, an idol, or an aspiration, or someone/something that’s worth emulating.

This is important in understanding hexagram 19, the opposite of hexagram 20. Contemplating these two hexagrams we see inherently the universal undeniable truth of cause and effect 因果 (in fact in the hexagrams we can see the workings of Cause and Effect – thanks Shakyamuni Buddha!). In this sense your understanding of the positive and negative sides of hexagram 19 is not off the mark.

Hexagram 19 to me really fits your situation. Remembering that Yi is like the finger pointing the way to the moon (this phrase comes from the Shurangama Sutra, made famous by Bruce Lee)l that the entire Yi also works this way of using allusions, metaphors, historical lessons to help develop the practitioner and help them navigate the BS of life, it will not do well do be so linear in your personal readings.

What i mean is that people often view their problems and the Yi readings from their troubled-P.O.V; they only want to get what suits their situation, often times this leads us to miss the mark entire regarding what the hexagram and the Yi-Diviners are alluding to: the world is bigger than our small problems, we are just part of a ecosystem fueld by archetypes and cause and effect; each hexagram/situation should help us transcend our current state of being (of course in this sense our original problems will be solved, but the solving of the original problem is not the only “reward”).

Looking at hexagram 19’s judgement, i will just stick with the Modernist interpretation of Yuan, Heng, Li, Zhen:

Yuan – Primordial (a time of pure potential)

Heng – Offering/Receipt (do you know the concept of equivalent exchange? Reciept means your woes are heard by the beings in the realms you do not see with your mortal eyes; Heng is great…it is telling you this hexagram requires you to do through a metamorphosis; it is possible that you have reached a nexus point/crossroad in your corner of the world where your cause and effect trajectory could change depending on what you do (can be tracked using Six Line Divination aka 文王卦 wizardry)

Li – Beneficial (verb)

Zhen – Prognostication

See how the Diviners who recognised cause and effect (back in high antiquity they did not have TikTok or Youtube, so the ancients spent a lot of time observing the workings of this existence and contemplated their purpose in life; they had eyes to peer deep into the fabric of reality; had the mental-capacity to recognise archetypes; and had the intention enough to test out reality via trial and error) encourages us do align back to the correct cause and effect nexus points in our lives when we enter into certain archetypal cycles?

Diviners of the old are saying that this time is a very excellent time to change the course of your life. Your woes are heard and the Calvary has arrived, but gotta offer yourself to the cause as nothing is free in this world. This resulting hexagram you’ve received is a has many great lessons that will benefit you; though it is also good to do a secondary oracle (Li Zhen – beneficial to prognosticate/Cast again – do not procastinate!)

Regarding the 8th month thing, that just means that your window of opportunity in this magnificent situation to change the course of your life is short; use the time wisely.

Hexagram 19 has two Yang lines approaching the Yin lines, like Gandalf approaching the Hobbits in LoTR; it can also be seen as the Yin lines all approaching the Yangs (though to be true, only the 4th yin line and the 5th yin line would do the approaching; the 6th yin line has no resonating partner so he chillin with his ice cream on the 8th month); i ascribe the former observation since hexagrams generally build itself upwards with an upward-primary energy.

The 2nd Yang is the leader of the Yang-posse, though in an incorrect position (a yang line in a yin position), it still manages to attract the attention of are the master of this hexagram, which is 5th Yin (though also not in a correct position, since it’s a yin line in a yang position); as these two aspects really do fit the theme of the hexagram: the approach/invitation to serve a greater cause; the short time they all have; the many trials they must all go through. Though the fulcrum points of this hexagram is in an incorrect position, due to hexagram 19 being an exceptional time (the four virtues Yuan, Heng, Li, Zhen) then this minor hickup doesn’t hinder such potential from both parties:

  • For 2nd Yang, whether one finds themselves in the midst of trials (signified by the Yin position) challenged on all sides, it stands up to all the Yins; in other words the unknown elements of any great endeavour and the many pitfalls, traps and distractions along the road. So in the face of danger (yin position) this line finds its testicular fortitude and walks on very bravely (signified by it’s Yang quality).
  • For 5th Yin this one finds itself in an exhalted position of great influence and power (signified by the Yang position that is inherently the 5th line); but this one still knows the dangers of the time as the 8th month is approaching (or in other words, time is running out….5th line is next to the 6th line…the end of this window of opportunity that is hexagram 19); so a person in this situation knows caution and applies himself through wise, skillful, intuitive and resourceful means in the hopes to prolong his short window of opportunity so that the damn yangs can make it in time for da paaaaartayy!!!!!

Since your hexagram casting has no lines in focused, then there’s no specific focused angle or element in your situation that bares special mention, in other words the lines don’t matter to your situation. But the overall allusion this entire hexagram is pointing to denotes a great time of personal change for the better. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. You may find as you align yourself back to hexagram 19’s True North, that you may benefit from a secondary oracle cast, as advised in the judgement. Only do so after an period of walking the path though, give things time…this is bigger than your constant relationship problems; your relationship problems is a clue as to the many hickups in your life. Take advice from lines 2 and 5; observe the cause and effect; the fulcrum point of this hexagram is telling us to serve a higher cause, though there may be pain along the way; and that someone out there, or a situation out there is waiting for your talents, love and great friendship.

What is the great cause? It could be something like becoming a better person so that your one true main squeeze will come your way and you guys can happily make babies. It could be the start of a new business or product line. It could be the solace you get from finally coming out of a really crappy life situation (aka unemployed for a million years, now you just got a job interview type thing). Either way this is no time to dilly dally!

PS – i would like to add that hexagram 33 is about tactical retreats; retreating with a purpose (also quite funnily, there is a Qigung system named TIAN-SHAN/Heaven-Mountain Qigung, very very fitting with the hexagram 33 principle too).
